When smelled, it immediately awakens humor in the whole body and has a very healthy aroma."
Silphium (of the genus Ferula) was a plant that grew in the area of Cyrene, in what is now Libya, and was widely known as a spice, medicinal plant, and perfume ingredient throughout the empires of classical antiquity. It was praised by Greek philosophers and writers, as well as by Roman emperors and cookbook authors. There have been many attempts to grow Silphium, but they have inevitably failed. It grew wild only in a limited area of the northern coast of Africa. This has made Silphium the most valuable in the world, surpassing saffron and cinnamon, as a spice and medicine. However, the taste and smell of what was once the most valuable spice in the world has faded over time. the image of this historic plant is created by researching the surviving putative relatives of Silphium, using aromatics (the molecular building blocks of fragrance) to create a harmony that reflects the surviving descriptions - against a background of ancient incense, woods and leather.
